RAAF in Korea.

RAAF in Korea - No. 77 Squadron became not only the first Australian squadron, but the first of the whole British Commonwealth to enter the fighting. The Squadron carried out 81,872 individual sorties, destroying 3,700 buildings, 1,500 vehicles and 16 bridges. It shot down three MiG-15's and three other enemy fighters.

Charles H. Cook flew a B-24D named "Cookie" with the 90th Bombardment Group in the southwest Pacific in 1942-1943. At that time, Allied forces were greatly outnumbered, and Japanese invasion of New Guinea and Australia was a very real threat.

Opinion Piece : Australia's Future Air Inferiority

Yes, you read it right, in the opinion of this author and it seems, many others, "Air Inferiority" is where the RAAF is headed with the current Federal Government's decision to scrap the Air 6000 replacement fighter evaluation study, to replace both the world's best long range, low level interdiction bomber - the F-111 Aardvark , and the F/A-18 Hornet with the lightweight, medium range, single seater F-35. Fact is stranger than fiction - and facts don't appear to weigh heavily with the decision makers in this crucial debate.

Giorgio flew the F-104 in the Italian Air Force starting in 1966 and accumulating almost 2000 hrs on the G and S models. Exemplifying high - tech 1950's design, this sleek machine, the epitome of the manned missile is still in service half a century later.

AUSSIE HUMOUR...

Sydney Olympics 2000 - Most news reports at the time attributed the flame to the F-111 "afterburner". However I found one reporter who had dug a bit deeper and got an explanation of how 'dump and burn' works. After a few paragraphs the reporter got carried away and, probably encouraged by the (RAAF ?) wag supplying the info, concluded with the statement :

"The F-111 is the only aircraft flying with "dump and burn technology"

The real story -

The F-111 streaks seaward trailing a fiery tail of a fuel dump occuring while the afterburner (reheat) is engaged. This was probably done the first time as a result of pilot error. When the aircraft didn't explode, and after reports from ground observers or another pilot, the technique was worked into RAAF air displays.

Over the years people have suggested it was a method of decoying Infra Red guided AA Missiles - but as an F-111 navigator put to me - "The last thing you want when evading a missile is 100 feet of flame coming out your rear!"

The first time the west good a good look at the MiG-29 Soviet "Superfighter" was at the Paris Airshow in 1989. The first I knew of it was in the sim - MiG-29 Fulcrum - Domark 1990.
