Avenger A-10

Avenger A-10 - 1991 - never completed.

Somewhere between Flight of the Intruder and Falcon 3.0 this project was shelved - despite press adverts appearing around the world.

Why? MiGMan's inside sources reveal the true story behind the fate of Avenger A-10.

Dogfight

Dogfight

Published by Microprose, Dogfight was released on Commodore Amiga, Atari ST and PC platforms.

I bought the Atari version and was blown away by the smooth and "complex" graphics and variety of gameplay. The graphics looked nothing at all like the splash screen above - being rather state of the art early 1990's shaded polygon models.

One outstanding innovation for the time was the inclusion of virtual cockpits padlock view. The Atari graphics looked much crisper than the PC version, probably because the Atari hardware and monitors were optimised for the low screen resolution whereas PC monitors displayed the 320 x 200 graphics as chunky rectangular pixel blocks.

Proflight

Proflight - the first Tornado sim

Proflight was one of the first flight sims I saw on a personal computer. I had an Atari ST - bought strictly for business use mind you - and I believe Proflight even ran on the Atari Monochrome monitor. In fact I'm sure it did - high res - 600 x 400 pixels ? Pretty amazing for the time.

Strike Aces or Fighter Bomber

Strike Aces or Fighter Bomber Strike Aces or Fighter Bomber
Strike Aces or Fighter Bomber - released in 1990 on the Atari ST, Commodore Amiga and PC Strike Aces was a sim with the focus on Air to Ground.

How's this for a mission brief :
  1. All enemy targets must be destroyed.
  2. You start with low internal fuel
  3. Due to length of mission, you may require air-air refuelling twice.
  4. Pick up secret plans from specified airport on Rwy36 or Rwy36L and deliver them to other specified airport
  5. Fly down the 'tunnel of death' and also destroy all SAM's in the 'tunnel'.
  6. Land back at base on any Rwy.
  7. Warning, a 10min timer may start at any time during the mission - the mission must be completed before the timer stops.
Tough enough ???

This was the sort of challenge posed by Activision's 1990 Strike Aces or Fighter Bomber.
