Can I learn to fly in a computer simulation?
What can't I do? ... said Chino. I haven't tried stalls and slow flight in FLY! yet -- they will work fine, I'm sure, but I don't think that would be very useful practice. There you really need to feel what is going on (e.g., the mushy control feel) and be able to quickly glance at the wingtips to keep the plane level. This is true for the "feel" of landings too, but there are procedural aspects that still make pattern work useful. |
A high flare I can't do real radio work in FLY! as I do in the real plane (FLY! has ATC features that I haven't used yet, but it's not the same as talking to the tower and being told to extend your downwind for an arriving helicopter). I'm sure there are other limitations, but there are certainly plenty of useful things to practice, and as long as I keep the differences and limitations in mind, I think it will help me learn to be a better pilot. |
