Cockpits on Location
Bill O'Riordan's Full Motion cockpit simulator
Bill O'Riordan
contacted me with images of
"
... a fully Articulated Flight Simulator I have built based on
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004
and many, many microcontrollers and software.
You can see my simulator on Prof Ernest Shannons site at
http://shannon.smugmug.com/gallery/528509.
I am the guy in the dark purple shirt and the worried look !!
"
A very immersive environment
Bill at the controls of his masterpiece
"No... not that left, the other left !!!"
Just a few components here !
I asked Prof. O'Riordan how it is articulated:
"
Briefly it is controlled PWM driven 12 Volt DC motors. It is interfaced directly into the Simulator.
My daughter Siobhain is a Doctor of Psychology so I have a slight advantage in understanding, specifying
and implementing the "washout" algorithms that are needed to convince the pilot that a lot more is really happening in a systematic and real manner than actually is!! That indeed gives you true synchronisation!!
John Panter a life long friend, Physicist and working colleague (The man that invented the OPD One-per-Desk, the precursor to the PC and just retired) has taken on the challenge of sorting this very difficult coding problem out. We expect results shortly. Otherwise the platform currently works well.
I have a fully articulated R22 helicopter almost completed as well. That is a real challenge!!
