Command and Conquer: Red Alert 2
I thoroughly enjoyed blasting my way through Red Alert 2. The at Westwood team gets better and better. They know their market and have produced a well balanced game. I played it on normal difficulty and found that about right for me. What's more I finished it on both sides - GDI and NOD!!
Novices have a lower difficulty setting and the truly brave can opt for a harder level. Naturally I opted for the most difficult setting - which is why I took weeks and weeks to finish - well that's my excuse!
As well as the couple of dozen scripted missions - which kept me entertained for a month - the skirmish mode provides a lot of replay against computer opponents. After a while of course you learn to out-think the AI but playing against humans online or on a network would be a real blast. Interestingly the promotional videos on the DVD gave me a lot of hints about gameplay. Most of the units gain attributes with experience - like the ability to self heal - and this gives you a great incentive to keep them alive.
Box contents Hardware Requirements Links Infantry are not as useless as they were in previous games - the Allied GI's can dig in by erecting sandbags. Menus are much much improved with separate tabs for construction, supply, defense and troops. The tabs flash when construction is complete and of course you can access them with keyboard shortcuts. MiGMan Update: 2008I fired the game up again to see if it would run in WIndows XP. Yep, no problems. There was one annoying trait though, which caused me to quit after a few skirmishes and campaign missions. The DVD drive runs flat out while you are playing (only during the campaign I believe). Not only is this noisy, but I've worn drives out before like this.
