James Bond
Thunderball

This is another title I didn't see until recently. It's a wonder because it was apparently a phenomenal hit.

Fans of 1950's and 60's English Jets will love this - there is quite a bit of footage revolving around the theft of a Vulcan bomber! It ends up on the bottopm of the sea. In fact quite a lot of the movie takes place under water. Footage of real Vulcans is interspersed with life size mockups - one under water - and one dodgy sequence where the Vulcan lands nicely on the sea, then sinks serenely to the bottom.

I say dodgy because I'm pretty sure NO jet is going to land in one piece on the sea and secondly the sequence looks just a tad "Gerry Andersen" (Thunderbirds).

Still it's nice to see such a classic jet on the silver screen.

Towards the end there is a massive paradrop - yes - into the sea!, and to cap it off Bond ends up the water with a lovely lady - as he often does.

But - he he he - it doesn't end there, in an impressive display - I mean they spared no expense in this movie - what looks like a Shackleton roars past and drops a liferaft.

OK - into the raft - and THEN... he puts on a harness - inflates a balloon - mmm, I guessed it was to aid the search party - but no.... it's a Skyhook!

The Shackleton comes roaring back what I had assumed to be EW aerials on the nose turn out to be the skyhook gear. Someone (a Bond double) goes sailing up and to cap it off the camera zooms in on our hero who is holding the hapless lady in his arms. Mmmm.... 0 to 120 knots in 2 seconds - that's the STRONG arm of the law!
