James Bond
You Only Live Twice

My earliest and fondest Bond memories stretch back to this movie, the first Bond epic I saw. The tension starts at a high level with Bond's "execution" and burial at sea, and it doesn't let up all the way through a gripping adaptation of Fleming's novel by Roald Dahl.

In a way I was spoilt by seeing this Bond epic first as in my opinion it is the best of the lot. On the cover you can see a ninja with samurai sword poised to strike. The film is set in, and was flimed mostly in, Japan and the sets and costumes range from ultra modern industrial to traditional fuedal with the costumes to match. Martial arts fans will appreciate the authentic swordplay and kendo.

Gadgets
The Japanese get most of the gadgets in this one, ranging from X-ray cameras in an executive desk to underground labyrinths and of course the ninja gear, which ranges from traditional shuriken and katana to automatic weapons. Bond's outstanding piece of gadgetry is "Little Nellie" - a Gyrocopter which arrives in suitcases and packs Sidewinders, cannon, rockets and aerial mines - somewhat like a one man MegaFortress!

The gyrocopter was a real machine - although it didn't pack into a suitcase! The aerial combat gyrocopter versus helicopters is spectacular - not the least due to the volcanic backdrop.

From go to whoa You Only Live Twice is stylish and tense - and, viewed through Bond-coloured glasses - probably the best film tribute to Ian Fleming's legendary character.
