I rememer the first time I booted it up on my 486 DX66. I leapt into the Grumman X-31 and headed for the clouds. For a while I was convinced there was something wrong with the program because this aircraft just seemed too fast!

|Avenger A-10||This sim was advertised in 1991 but it never saw the light of day. MiGMan's industry sources reported that the main problem was in the low altitude rendering of terrain by the graphics engine: "The slight "warping" movement and the sudden appearance of terrain features which was quite acceptable in an F-16 sim was to prove a fatal stumbling block in the A-10 operating environment."||1991|

|Back to Baghdad||Back to Baghdad was set in the Gulf War (1991) . It was a DOS sim with claims to high fidelity of flight model and weapons systems modelling and was priced about 30% higher than other PC sims at the time. The publishers Military Simulations Inc. went on to specialise in military sims and released no more products for the home market. It was unique in that it supported a second monitor for the radar display - and this while running in DOS !||1996|
|Battle of Britain||Play by email is fully supported and well suits the chess-like nature of the game. It is turn -based with events unfolding in real time once both sides have entered their decisions. You can zoom in and out on the action. You can set up for a 1 day event or elect to play out the whole 6 week campaign.||1999|
|Birds of Prey||Great sim-moments... " The weapons were destructive to any object, no matter what the device or target. I have witnessed a Forger get hit AFTER launching from a carrier by a Mk83 slick released by a B-1B Lancer." ... attention to detail... " Air density - this caused problems with many aircraft engines. Low level, the afterburner could instantly kick in, but get it above, say 25,000ft and you may have to wait several seconds or more for it to open up." The game included many aircraft, most never before seen on a sim in the UK. The choice of weapons was stunning too - everything apart from nukes and chemical warheads." Pretty good for a sim that came on ONE floppy disk - 720 K ! Nowadays it would require 2 CD-ROM.... no, make that 2 DVDs ! Ah these were the grand old days!
|Black Knight||Black Knight Marine Strike Fighter SE was distributed as a shareware demo in 1995 with some functions disabled.
The graphics were VGA (300 x 200). The publisher was FormGen. It ran very fast on a 486 and was worth a look at as an introduction to jet combat sims.
|Check Six||Check Six was the first flight simulation from Pegasus Japan on the NEC PC-9801 Series. In this game the player is a mercenary pilot who gets rewarded for successful missions and can buy aircraft. Screen resolution is 640 x 400 pixels and 16 colors. It looks similar to Air Combat III.||1993|
|Chuck Yeager's Air Combat||Exhibit contains 1 hour of free audio - Yeager talking about tactics and flying. Chuck Yeager's Air Combat was for many people their first exposure to PC flight simulation of any kind and the beginning of a life-long hobby.||1990|
|Close Combat 1: Invasion Normandy||Close Combat set a new standard in Real Time Strategy games.
It was based on the long running Squad Leader series of table-top simulations, and not only did it model weapons and terrain - but also the psychology of each individual soldier.
This was revolutionary because it meant that those little guys would no longer necessarily obey your every mouse click. The little soldiers react to events around them and interpret your orders according to their fatigue and morale. To players like myself who whetted their Real time Strategy teeth on Command and Conquer and Dark Reign, this added great subtlety to the gaming experience, or should I say it required much more subtlety in command to get results.
On the plus side, and this is pure joy.... the little fellows make intelligent use of any available cover, using trees, undergrowth, walls, buildings, trenches... any available cover. They'll also go to ground when under fire... crawling if necessary to limit their exposure to fire. Now this was a definite bonus!
|Close Combat 2: A Bridge Too Far||Close Combat 2 - A Bridge Too Far starts on December 17th, 1944 and takes you through Operation Market Garden.||1998|
|Close Combat 3: The Russian Front||Cycling through these steps in battle will help you keep on top of things. The fluid nature of Close Combat precludes winning with any rigid set of tactics. |Comanche||The graphics engine used "Voxel" technology which was a novel way of treating pixels to gain more detail and speed. Rather than applying bitmaps to 3D terrain, each pixel actually contained it's own altitude data. The result was the most exciting terrain seen on a PC to that point in time. |Command and Conquer||The Command and Conquer series was a brilliant concept which revolutionised strategy gaming. Some say for the better - some say for the worse.
I say for the better, because it allowed a quick and easy entry into the world of simulated ground battle. The genius of the designers was to create an engrossing plot with accessible gamplay with scalability of difficulty. Personally I have spent faaaaarrrr too much time playing these games.... over and over.... !

|Dark Reign||I first ran Dark Reign on a 486-DX66 ... and it ran very well! At the time I was undecided between getting Total Annhilation, which had also just been released, and Dark Reign. The salesman reckoned that my poor old '486 would have a better shot at running Dark Reign since TA used a lot of polygons on screen. Anyway it ran very smoothly.||1995|

|Dogfight||Published by Microprose, Dogfight was released on Commodore Amiga, Atari ST and PC platforms. I bought the Atari version and was blown away by the smooth and "complex" graphics and variety of gameplay. The graphics looked nothing at all like the splash screen above - being rather state of the art early 1990's shaded polygon models.
One outstanding innovation for the time was the inclusion of virtual cockpits padlock view. The Atari graphics looked much crisper than the PC version, probably because the Atari hardware and monitors were optimised for the low screen resolution whereas PC monitors displayed the 320 x 200 graphics as chunky rectangular pixel blocks.
|EF 2000||EF 2000 was a landmark air combat simulation which bridged the transition from DOS to Windows and raised the stakes forever in terrain, flight modelling and dynamic campaign engines.
"Taxiing quickened the pulse as the Eurofighter bobbed and bounced on its suspension. Sunlight glinted through the canopy, wheel brakes on, engine spooled up and the beast was straining at the leash. Brakes off and the tyres rumbled... 120 knots and the dragon lept into the air."

|F/A-18 Super Hornet||It demands your full attention... it detects you are not giving full attention... turns around and bites you hard!
The computers do their best to fly the plane where you point it, but can't rescue you from gross errors of judgement like my low loops!
From a hard-core point of view I like this... it forces you to correct sloppy habits and get into the checklist mentality.. getting into a "landing state of mind"" when landing... not dwelling on the fantastic dogfight you just had / didn't have.
This indeed is the essence of creating an immersive sim!
|F-15||F-15 by Janes has to be the Strike Fighter Sim of the Millenium!
Although it does have a formidable Air to Air capability in terms of Radar and ordnance, it is about half way down the ladder in manoeuverability... not a dogfight machine! But for fans of the Strike Aircraft community... F-111, A-6 Intruder, Tornado... 1998 was hog heaven!
|F-15 Strike Eagle II - Sega Genesis version||1993|
|F-16 Aggressor||F-16 Aggressor was said to have a flight model so close to the real thing that the 'Men in Black' paid the developers a visit and asked them to tone it down a bit. Released just before Falcon 4.0, it could have been a classic but corporate machinations instead steered it towards the dusty archives of Flight Sim History.||1998|
|F-16 Fighting Falcon||From the makers of Tornado came in 1997 an F-16 sim with many of the features fans loved about that previous classic.
It was released in DOS, then a windows version, then upgraded for 3DFX, and in 1998 an Afghanistan Campaign was released.
|F-16 Fighting Falcon was developed by Mastertronics for the Sinclair Spectrum.
Despite the name, the intro screen actually shows an A-V8B Harrier jump jet... of sorts, it is depicted as having two tail fins!
|F-22 ADF||F22 Air Dominance Fighter by Digital Image Design was the most extensive attempt to recreate the modern air combat environment seen on a PC.||1998|
|F-22 Interceptor on the Sega Genesis||" I wondered if this old Genesis sim F22 Interceptor at the Genesis Project was ported from a PC or Mac version. At the time I had a Atari 800, and when I saw this, I bought the Genesis and the F-22 interceptor because I coudn't find it on any other platform. "||1991|

|Fighters Anthology||Fighters Anthology brought the DOS sims US Navy Fighters - Marine Fighters - Advanced Tactical Fighters - NATO Fighters - and the Windows sim US Navy Fighters '97 into one collection running under Windows. Fighters Anthology is usually referred to as a "survey sim" - meaning that it covers a range of aircraft but doesn't go into great depth on each one. Well that may be so but I for one never ran out of interesting things to do in the series. At one time I wrote a set of emergency checklists - and at one time or another every one of these problems happened to me! It was fun finding out just how many ways the programmers had provided to break the aircraft!
Who can forget that screeching, irritating whine when you threw a turbine blade?

|Flight of the Intruder||Flight of the Intruder, released in 1991, is one of the classic combat flight sims of all time! It was developed by two teams, one in the USA and one in the UK.
Flyable aircraft were the A-6 Intruder, F-4 Phantom, MiG-21 - this was the first time I got to fly a MiG-21! I remember flying head-to-head against my brother - he in the F-4 Phantom and myself in the MiG-21. Somehow he could always tell which aircraft was piloted by me despite my best efforts to send in the drones first

|Gunship 2000||Gunship 2000 was an Apache Gunship sim released in 1991 by Microprose.
As usual with their products a strong sense of atmosphere was maintained by seamless menu screens and music.
From the opening screen, atmosphere was the keyword as the Apache hovered menacingly before launching rockets straight at you!
If you only have a 386 and want some Chopper action get this!
|Gunship 2000 - Phillipine Islands and Antarctica Scenario Disk||Gunship 2000 - Phillipine Islands and Antarctica Scenario Disk was developed and published by Microprose in 1992.
It was an add-on to the successful Gunship 2000.
|Harrier Jump Jet||Those were the days! A 270 page manual printed on glossy stock and well bound in a size ideal for throne room reading. As well as heaps of tables detailing air-to-ground weapon effectiveness there was diagram after diagram on air combat manoeuvres. Not to mention the 3 full - colour maps.
In the early 90's PC's had finally come into their own as games machines, with Sound Cards and powerful CPU's of the 386 variety! Harrier Jump Jet pushed the machines of the day with it's smooth rolling terrain. I didn't get a chance to play it until it was reissued under the Power Plus banner.
The cockpit was flat and the aircraft polygonal with none of the texture mapping we take for granted today. Did this spoil my enjoyment? No!
|Harrier Strike Mission||"Harrier Strike Mission" was one of (if not THE) first flight sims for the Atari ST. It was designed and published by the same people (Miles Computing) who put out ST Wars -- a Star Wars trench-type vector graphic sim."||1990|
|Hind||The makers of Tornado sent the sim world a Helicopter Gunship sim with a difference!
It's big, it's mean looking, it's heavily armoured and carries a huge swag of ordnance... its the Mi-24 Hind Gunship!

|iF-16||iF-16 was developed by Digital Integration and published by Interactive Magic in 1997. The fact that this sim was also released as F16 Fighting Falcon had me confused for quite a while!

|Israeli Air Force||Israeli Air Force was developed by Pixel and released on the Janes Combat Simulations label in 1998. Israeli Air Force was a the first sim in a long time to feature the F-4 Phantom.||1998|
|Jagdverband 44 - Screaming Eagles||Jagdverband 44 - Screaming Eagles was released in 1999 by Hammer Technologies. Translated into English it means "Hunting Group ' 44" and features the Luftwaffe super-weapons. Francisco J. Campos points out : "Flight sims always have high sales in Spain and a videogame shop isn't complete here without a specific simulation section. That's why, at the end of 1999, when I heard first time about Jagdverband 44 - Screaming Eagles I jumped for joy. The bad thing about being a flight sim collector is that you buy everything just for the sake of having it... and sometimes you get bad surprises in nice boxes! "||1999|

|Jet Warrior - Vietnam||An latest installment in the Air Warrior flight simulator series which recreates the aircraft and campaigns of the Vietnam Conflict.||1999|
|Jetfighter||In 1988, an unknown Macintosh developer called Velocity premiered a flight simulation called Jetfighter This was the start of one of the most successful combat sim series ever. "The original Jetfighter had you fly the F-14 and F-18 from the deck of an aircraft carrier off the California coast, as well as an F-16 from any one of several San Francisco area airfields."||1990|
|Jetfighter II||In 1988, an unknown Macintosh developer called Velocity premiered a flight simulation called Jetfighter. The success of this program lead Velocity to take it seriously and they released two years later a sequel: Jetfighter II.
This was one of the first Flight sims I saw on the PC. I remember teaching a friend of mine how to turn on to the bogey using the Immelman and Split-S. Man, this felt like flying! It couldn't get any better than this !!
"JFII upped the ante by adding a new plane - the F-23, the production version of the YF-23 that competed against the YF-22 in the USAF's ATF competition."
|Jetfighter II - Advanced Mission Disk||1992|
|Jetfighter 3||Jetfighter 3 - released in 1997 - was probably the last of the great DOS based Combat Flight Sims.
The speed of play and level of accurate detail in the topography is hard to match even 10 years later.
|Jetfighter Full Burn||Jetfighter Fullburn was a standalone adaption of Jetfighter III released in 1997. Based on the Jetfighter 3 graphics engine, it had Russian and U.N. Forces, and you could fly for either side. Graphically, it was a very pleasing sim with some of the best looking clouds I'd seen to date.
4 CD's with lots of full-motion video in the campaigns added to the atmosphere and sense of a storyline. Campaigns were set in the Nordic states and the terrain corresponded pretty closely to real-life navigation charts.
|Joint Strike Fighter||1997|
|KA-50 Hokum||This sim used the same graphics engine as AV8B Harrier Assault except that it only ran in 320 x 300 resolution. This was hard to understand as the campaign system and other features were pretty much the same.||1998|
|Knights of the Sky||"KOTS is the best simulation of the WWI air war I have found. They really captured the essence of the times with the random life expectancy factor and true deflection shooting, without the misery of diahorrea from castor oil fumes.
In hundreds of 'lives', I've only managed to survive the war once, just like real life. KOTS really isn't a 'game'. It's a pretty accurate immersion in an historical hotspot. "
|LHX Attack Chopper||The cockpit is simple looking now, but in 1990 it was state of the art! You could configure the MFD's to your taste as well.
You could fly the Apache, Blackhawk, Osprey or the LHX. The Boeing Osprey VTOL which was featured in the novel "Hammerheads" by Dale Brown . This was the only simulation of the Osprey of the millenium!!
|Lightning Simulator||"a budget title for the Spectrum. The sim was based around the RAF's Lightning point interceptor. Although the graphics were wire frame and there were practically no ground graphics, the attention to detail, complexity, flight modelling and combat were unbelievable. I think the programmer had been a Lightning pilot. "||1990|
|Longbow||Longbow from Janes was released in 1996 and remains possibly the most immersive simulation of the AH-64D Apache Longbow attack helicopter.||1996|
|Longbow 2||Longbow 2 was the sequel to Longbow and it added two more flyable choppers to the Longbow stable... the BlackHawk, and the Kiowa, as well of course as the Apache Longbow.
There was also added a virtual cockpit mode, fully scrollable with readable instrument displays. The Kiowa and Blackhawk cockpits featured side by side seating, and the Blackhawk even had door gunners!
Longbow 2 succeeds in immersing you totally in it's world and to me this is the most important characteristic of a Combat Flight Sim.
Not because of the the fancy graphics effects, although it has that, not the fast scrolling and detailed terrain, although it has that, not the detailed weapons systems, although it has that, not the great sound effects and radio traffic, although it has that too.... it's that indefinable balance of elements, the "artistry", which first addicts, frustrates and then exhilarates.
|Luftwaffe Collection (1999)||Recreates 20 classic aircraft from the Luftwaffe's 20th century roster and includes a couple of surprises like a gyrocopter, the V-1 Flying Bomb and a Zeppelin.||1999|

|Microsoft Combat Flight Sim||Microsoft's first foray into combat flight sims was hugely successful and highly entertaining. Microsoft Combat Flight Sim will run quite well on a Pentium 233 and a modest graphics card - I used a Banshee 2D/3D Graphics Accelerator Card the first time around. For a controller I used the inexpensive Top Gun Afterburner II. It doesn't have to cost the earth and you don't need a brand new computer with all the bells and whistles to enjoy Flight Sims. In 2001 I played 84 missions - NOT counting replays - in Microsoft Combat Flight Sim. I played the campaigns which come with the sim - that's 48 missions, and then downloaded Mike Eustace and Doug Attrell's fabulous Korean campaigns which gave me another 36 missions of fast jet action and carrier ops.||1998|

|Red Alert||Red Alert was the second in the series.
The first noticeable differences to Command and Conquer were that Red Alert ran under Windows 95 rather than DOS, and in 600 x 400 resolution as opposed to 320 x 200.
I spent hours and hours at the local internet cafe - tying up their sole machine - playing head to head with a mate across town.
|Red Alert 2||I thoroughly enjoyed blasting my way through Red Alert 2. The at Westwood team gets better and better. They know their market and have produced a well balanced game. I played it on normal difficulty and found that about right for me. What's more I finished it on both sides - GDI and NOD!!
Infantry are not as useless as they were in previous games - the Allied GI's can dig in by erecting sandbags. Menus are much much improved with separate tabs for construction, supply, defense and troops. The tabs flash when construction is complete and of course you can access them with keyboard shortcuts.

|Sabre Ace||Back in 1997 3D FX cards were hitting the market. The quantum leap in graphics capabiliies this provided to the average gamer can't be underestimated. But this many years on it is difficult to remember those first steps. My first impression was that I could "reach into the screen and grab the planes!" They didn't look so much like real aircraft, as much as flying model aircraft. It was as if my collection of scale models had escaped into my computer !||1997|

|Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe||Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe was a classic flight sim released by LucasArts in 1990. It featured experimental German aircraft from WW2 and was developed by Lawrence Holland.||1990|
|Strike Commander||Strike Commander was a revolutionary flight sim and one of the all-time best selling. The strong story line and role-playing elements meant that it's appeal extended far beyond that market segment whose main interest lay in the simulation aspects.
It's hard to believe today but I the public (including myself) was awestruck by the graphics in in this sim in 1993.I know one (Danish) fellow who upgraded his PC about 9 times in order to play it!
To quote the creator, Chris Roberts:
"To make RealSpace truly revolutionary we decided to gamble on two major graphics techniques: Gouraud shading and texture mapping. Both of these techniques are used extensively on high-end military flight simulators costing millions of dollars...
.... our biggest mistake was thinking that we could achieve all of this in a single year."
|Su-25 Sturmovik||This sim probably runs well on a 386, it screams along on a 486 or above. You'll need a utility such as mo'slo to run it on a Pentium. The Su-25 has been sadly neglected by game designers... the next appearance after this was a footnote in "NATO Fighters".||1990|
|Su-27 Flanker||Su-27 Flanker was developed by The Fighter Collection and published by Strategic Simulations Inc in 1995. It was designed by a Russian team of programmers to run on 386 and low end 486 machines. The project was taken on by Strategic Simulations Inc and revised to SVGA graphics resolution. The Russian designers didn't have access to the faster PC's, and as a result the code is very efficient.... it ran very smoothly/||1995|

|TFX||When you look at the graphics available in the other early 1990s it's easy to see why TFX caused so much excitement on it's release. TFX is an acronym for "Tactical Fighter Experimental". The flight model could be adjusted from "arcade" to "military" and play modes ranged from arcade levels to the "UN Commander" mode. As UN Commander you planned missions, selected the aircraft and flew the Eurofighter, F22 or F117 Stealth Fighter.||1993|
|Top Gun: Fire at Will||Top Gun: Fire at Will was a light sim based on the movie starring Tom Cruise. It was originally released in 1995 then again in the Microprose "Powerplus" series in 1998. The sim introduces the player to basic concepts of Air Combat with plenty of commentary and advice coming from your backseater and instructors.
The sequel Top Gun - Hornet's Nest " took the game to a totally new level of graphic sophistication.

|US Navy Fighters||This sim was the successor to the wildly popular Chuck Yeager's Air Combat and started a series that ran to the end of the 1990's. Get an overview of the series in the Fighters Anthology exhibit. The combat focussed gameplay was enhanced by the atmospheric and user friendly interface. The ability to tweak most aspects of the sim from the graphics to mission waypoints and loadouts made you feel in control without overwhelming you with detail. It still remains a model of good interface design.
The first mission of the Ukraine campaign remains for many fans a reminder of just how atmospheric a sim can be. |WWII Fighters||Like most Janes sims this one pushed the PC hardware available at the time of it's release (1998) to the limits. A year and a half down the track it will run very well on the average new machine - provided you have a 3D accelerator fitted of course!
If you have good sound insulation, play World War 2 Fighters LOUD as the sound effects are stunning. Nearby explosions made me jump out of my seat several times!
With the plethora of user created missions there is a lot of life left in World War 2 Fighters yet
