Dogfight

Dogfight

Published by Microprose, Dogfightwas released on Commodore Amiga, Atari ST and PC platforms.

I bought the Atari version and was blown away by the smooth and "complex" graphics and variety of gameplay. The graphics looked nothing at all like the splash screen above - being rather state of the art early 1990's shaded polygon models.

One outstanding innovation for the time was the inclusion of virtual cockpits padlock view. The Atari graphics looked much crisper than the PC version, probably because the Atari hardware and monitors were optimised for the low screen resolution whereas PC monitors displayed the 320 x 200 graphics as chunky rectangular pixel blocks.

Jetfighter II Jetfighter II
Title - Jetfighter II
Release Date - 1990
Developer - Velocity
Publisher - Mission Studios
Collection - - No
Comments - This was one of the first Flight sims I saw on the PC. I'll never forget the buzz I got from lining up on the carrier- adjusting the throttle and hearing that roaring, buzzing sound of the engine as it spooled up and down in smooth response. Man, this felt like flying! It couldn't get any better than this !!

Comments - The cockpit is simple looking now, but in 1990 it was state of the art! You could configure the MFD's to your taste as well. You could fly the Apache, Blackhawk, Osprey or the LHX. The Boeing Osprey VTOL which was featured in the novel "Hammerheads" by Dale Brown . This was the only simulation of the Osprey until the year 2000!

Operation Harrier

Proflight, the Tornado sim by Hisoft for Atari St and Amiga (1990).
Exhibit: Proflight

Year: 1990
Developer: HiSoft
Publisher: HiSoft
Platform: Atari ST, Commodore Amiga
Collection: No.
Comments: Proflight was one of the first flight sims I saw on a personal computer. I had bought an Atari ST to arrange and print music for my string quartet and included in the package was a demo of this amazingly fluid sim, running at 600 x 400 pixels (in monochrome).

Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe

Specs :

Snowstrike

Strike Aces or Fighter Bomber Strike Aces or Fighter Bomber Strike Aces or Fighter Bomber
Exhibit: Strike Aces / Fighter Bomber (1989)

Developer:
Publisher: Activision and Accolade
Platform: Atari ST, Commodore Amiga and PC
Collection:
Comments: The sim was set in a bombing competition inspired by Gen. Curtis LeMay's training events. It featured an unusual mix of flyable aircraft: F-4 Phantom , F-15E Strike Eagle, F-111 Aardvark, MiG-27 Flogger, RAF and Luftwaffe Tornado and the Saab Viggen.

How's this for a mission brief :
  1. All enemy targets must be destroyed.
  2. You start with low internal fuel
  3. Due to length of mission, you may require air-air refuelling twice.
  4. Pick up secret plans from specified airport on Rwy36 or Rwy36L and deliver them to other specified airport
  5. Fly down the 'tunnel of death' and also destroy all SAM's in the 'tunnel'.
  6. Land back at base on any Rwy.
  7. Warning, a 10min timer may start at any time during the mission - the mission must be completed before the timer stops.
Tough enough ???

This was the sort of challenge posed by Activision's 1990 Strike Aces or Fighter Bomber.
