F-16 Aggressor
Title - F-16 Aggressor
Release Date - 1998
Developer - General Simulations Incorporated Ltd.
Publisher - Virgin Interactive
Comments - F-16 Aggressorwas said to have a flight model so close to the real thing that the 'Men in Black' paid the developers a visit and asked them to tone it down a bit. Released just before Falcon 4.0, it could have been a classic but corporate machinations instead steered it towards the dusty archives of Flight Sim History.

Release Date - 1998
Platform - PC
Developer - Microprose
Publisher - Hasbro

Comments - Falcon 4.0 was probably the most ambitious air combat sim ever attempted, with a full scale war on the Korean peninsula being modelled. From a problematic beginning - with several patches released before the development team was disbanded by Hasbro - to a glorious maturity with the user supported development, Falcon is an iconic sim. From a problematic beginning - with several patches released before the development team was disbanded by Hasbro - to a glorious maturity with the user supported development, Falcon is an iconic sim. And the saga is not over yet - in 2001 Hasbro announced Falcon 5.0 with part of the development team being formed from the talented programmers from the ibeta team, a group of enthusiasts who are patching and tweaking Falcon until it satisfies even the hardest of hard core simmers! Falcon 4.0 - This 1998 release is part of a flight sim dynasty that spans over a decade. It remains the most ambitious simulation of modern air war in an F-16 Falcon. Extensive user modifications have kept it alive. Falcon 4.0 - This 1998 release is part of a flight sim dynasty that spans over a decade. Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator
Title - Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator (1998)
Developer -
Publisher - Microsoft
Collection - - Retail box (CD ROM)
Comments - A successful foray into combat flight - hugely entertaining.

It doesn't have to cost the earth and you don't need a brand new computer with all the bells and whistles to enjoy Flight Sims. In 2001 I played 84 missions - NOT counting replays - in Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator (1998). I played the campaigns which come with the sim - there's 48 missions - and then downloaded Mike Eustace and Doug Attrell's fabulous Korean campaigns which gave me another 36 missions of fast jet action and carrier ops.

Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator (1998) will run quite well on a Pentium 233 and a modest graphics card - I used a Creative 3D Blaster Bansheethe first time around. For a controller I used the inexpensive Top Gun Afterburner II.

Red Baron 3D
Title - Red Baron 3D
Release Date - 1998
Developer - Sierra
Publisher - Sierra
Collection - - Yes
Comments - One of the first 3D flight sims to take advantage of the 3DFX Voodoographics accelerator cards, which were new technology in 1998. Red Baron 3-D is an engrossing recreation of the air wars over France in WW1. The style of presentation can't fail to educate as it entertains. With British, American, French and German services to fly in and a full complement of planes it represents hours of flying fun.

Total Air War sported a spiral bound manual which included more than one hundred pages of detailed information on both allies and adversaries weapons platforms and systems! Clearly, Ocean Software Ltd. was getting the message that Digital Image Design,s followers were SERIOUS simulation gamers.
