A-10 Cuba Video Training MiGMans Combat Diary year: 1996 The A-10's ordnance can be clearly seen hanging off the hardpoints.
Your main aerial threats are MiG-29 Fulcrums and the Su-25 Sturmovik.
Luckily for me the A-10 is still able to fly with damaged wings and control surfaces.
It's Pucker factor 5 at low altitude - there are structures everywhere!
The sensation of altitude and speed at low level is up there with the best You'll also notice the effectiveness of the A-10 camouflage. Actually all the planes are hard to spot, especially when they get down low.
Air Power Cold War MiGMans Combat Diary year: 2000 I love the Angle of Attack meter in this cockpit. Here I'm turning to land, pulling about 17 degrees AOA and 2G. When you hit 30 degrees AOA the stall warning starts ticking loudly. You can even enter high speed stalls by wrenching back on the stick too aggressively at speed.
Air Power Cold War 1 MiGMans Combat Diary NATO year: 2000 The Cold War has turned hot and we're in the thick of it. Use your rockets by pressing '3' or 'ctrl-3' for a fused rocket. One or 2 near misses will bring down a Bear, and a MiG too if you're lucky.
A Tu-16 Badger and its crew have decided to defect to the West and are circling your base trying to get permission to land. You and your wingman are escorting the defector and must defend him from the attacking MiGs who will do anything to shoot down their erstwhile comrade.
He he - those MiG-19 's are pretty good, and determined to down their defecting comrade. Not once have I managed to protect the Tupolev Tu-16 Badger, but , not to worry, the dogfighting is excellent!
Intelligence reports indicate that the Soviets are arming some bombers with nuclear weapons which will be used against NATO targets. Only your F-100 has been able to penetrate the defences. Destroy the bombers as they take off with your guns and rockets and then escape Westwards if you can, but beware - these Badgers are no easy game !
Those Tupolev Tu-16 Badger 's are deadly shots with the tail gun. I was shot to pieces several times before I managed to nail one. At least the MiG-19's which turn up only have forward facing cannon!
Finally, after disposing of the Tupelov's and MiG I headed home on 'warp drive' - and about 105 miles from home ran out of gas!
Fortunately I was 3 miles out from an airstrip and managed to 'dead stick' it in.
A fun mission.
Air Power Cold War 1 MiGMans Combat Diary Warsaw Pact year: 2000 It's a tough job protecting those Bears against the Hawker Hunter F.6's of R.A.F. Woodbridge.
If you do clear the air don't try and land at R.A.F. Woodbridge or you'll get a most unfriendly reception from the AAA! Since there are no waypoints leading home I decided to 'defect' and land at the deserted base a few miles South.
Avro Vulcan for CFS2 Installation MiGMans Combat Diary Review year: 2002 This is a plane which spent most of its life flying from A to B, dropping a bomb once and then retiring. The Microsoft Flight Simulator 2002 version would at least offer a rich environment to fly in. With the radio and air activity in that sim you could at least imagine you were on a Cold War mission of utmost gravity.
It was early April 2000 and 2 of the world's most fearsome helicopter gunships landed on home PCs worldwide. Enemy Engaged: RAH-66 Comanche versus Ka-52 Hokum, to give it it's full name, is the successor to Enemy Engaged: Apache vs Havoc.
F/A-18E Super Hornet MiGMans Combat Diary year: 1999 This plane looks hot and I just want to get airborne!
Forget studying the manual, forget flight planning, forget pre-flight... how hard could it be?
What could go wrong?
Fighters Anthology Hornet: 5B MiGMans Combat Diary MiGMan: Operation CORK year: 1998 Welcome Back to Navy life! To remind you, your objectives for this phase of the campaign are:
The North Koreans have been making noises about the Russian oil rigs in this area. Look out for attacks by torpedo boats or bombers, as well as protecting the fleet. Get used to the busy pace of Naval aviating again!
Fighters Anthology Mission 1C MiGMans Combat Diary MiGMan: Operation CORK year: 1998 The situation is worsening. Russia has effectively lost control of the region North of Vozdvichenka and the North Koreans have become involved.
Protect the fleet from enemy aircraft. Keep an eye on the E-2 Hawkeye, and try to protect the Harriers and A-6's as they try to turn back an approaching North Korean fleet.
Fighters Anthology Mission 3B MiGMans Combat Diary MiGMan: Operation CORK year: 1998 Once again provide CAP over the Marine base being set up at Vozdvichenka. Keep an eye on the E-2C Hawkeye, which is now orbiting farther North. As soon as you take off, set up the data link and check the E-2 position on your moving map display. When the area is safe, land at the Marine base.
Fighters Anthology 1 TARCAP MiGMans Combat Diary year: 1998 Notes: Your wingman will report contacts, so be ready to order "Attack contact" Alt F. As you egress to Waypoint E, perform a full circle turn every minute or so and check your radar for bandits. Cruise at 75 -80 % throttle (4) to enable your wingman to keep up. At Waypoint G, tell your wingman to "Bug Out" (Alt-B) and follow him at 1 mile separation for a carrier landing.
Fighters Anthology 17 RESCAP MiGMans Combat Diary year: 1998 Try to stay above the fog. Use the Bad Weather / Night Intercept Checklist if you have to descend into the soup. To land, try designating the carrier on Ground Radar(Shift-R), fly over it and execute a landing pattern.
Bear in mind that an IFR carrier landing is about the most difficult thing you can attempt in the world of flying. If you quit the mission (Ctrl-Q) within 3 miles of the carrier you will still get a "Mission successful" message.
Fighters Anthology 22 Collateral Damage (STRIKE) MiGMans Combat Diary year: 1998 As usual, lose the two external fuel pods and adjust internal fuel to 79%. Since this is a "precision" strike, load up with AGM-65 Mavericks or GBU-10 Paveways.
Mind you, to my knowledge there were no AGM-65's deployed in the early 1970's, but I guess they approximate the Walleye's actually used at the time.
Fighters Anthology 25 Tonkin Gulf Shooting Club (Sweep) MiGMans Combat Diary year: 1998 The sun sure comes up late in these parts, but don't worry it will be shining in a couple of minutes. Apparently you have to destroy all the MiGs, on the ground and airborne, so take a close look at Hanoi airport. This is one of Jane's famous hair-tearing / frustrating missions...expect to play it a few times to succeed.
I was lucky enough to be a special guest at the launch of the first MiG-21 in Australia, in the early 1990;s. The aircraft was so loud in afterburner we thought it had blown up!
The impressive acceleration combined with its diminutive size meant that it disappeared from sight very quickly. So quickly that it was difficult to pan my camera fast enough to keep it in view. A few seconds after takeoff it had literally disappeared. It was frightening to imagine being on the receiving end of a ground attack by jet aircraft... by the time you heard the sound and looked up it would be raining trouble!
