QUESTION:
" How is it possible to fly a plane into the World Trade Center?"
" How difficult would it actually be?
I fired up
FLY!
and set up a Hawker biz jet at JFK, took off and made a wide right turn, heading for the rather
sparse Manhattan sky line at about 900 feet (I don't have the detailed scenery installed for NYC as
I do for the Worcester area).
Answer: The conclusion is, once the jet is in the air, steering it into a building-size target like the
twin towers is not really that hard, and I think anyone could do it with just a few minutes of instruction.
Not that hard.
Of course the terrorists could have been qualified commercial pilots who navigated from the hijack point
to the NYC area themselves. Or they may have forced the pilots to fly to the NYC area without telling
them their true intentions. But once they had a visual on the towers, crashing into them would not be
very hard, especially in the ultra-clear VFR weather this morning.
FLY!
doesn't indulge any destructive impulses with explosions or SFX. Their licensing agreements with
the companies whose planes they simulate require them to keep the planes intact and just give you
messages like "maximum positive G exceeded" as the plane bounces.
It's very strange to not hear or see ANY planes going over my house -- usually I see and hear a lot of air traffic.
But all US civilian flights are grounded by the FAA for the first time in history. SO strange.
