Back in 1992 CDROM's were showing up on PC's and "interactive movies" like "Dragon's Lair" seemed to point the way forward in interactive games. Planetside used a technique of scrolling pre-rendered landscapes which were originally created using fractal equations.Planetside was never released as far as I know but it shows one of the directions that seemed promising at the time - Planetside

Strike Aces or Fighter Bomber

Francisco J. Campos sent in some more screenshots for Strike Aces or Fighter Bomber.

This was a hot title on the early 16 bit computers - the Atari ST and Commodore Amiga series were capable of generating speedy polygon based aircraft and the occasional pyramidal hill at a reasonable frame rate.

Aircraft silhouette ID screen - Devices such as this were designed to combat pirating of the software. They are not dissimilar to aircraft ID training cards used in pilot training.
