VPK, Correspondent - The New Lord of the Air
This is a November, 2006, summary article about the new Russian Su-35 upgrade package, including the new Irbis - E phased array which is designed to triple the peak power rating against the N-011M BARS radar supplied on India's Sukhoi Su-30MKI Flanker H fighter. The Irbis is to be fitted to the Su-35 block upgrade and is likely to appear on other Flanker variants.
Of relevance is that NIIP, the radar house, are claiming a detection range of up to 400 km (215 NMI) against an airborne fighter size target (3 square metres). This is unprecedented performance for a Russian fighter radar and will be well in excess of the APG-79 on the Super Hornet. In fact, the cited performance exceeds public release figures for the F-22A's APG-77 radar, yet the Russians do not claim superior performance to the APG-77.
