RAAF - The Royal Australian Air Force
DEFENCE MEDIA RELEASE
CPA 019/08 Monday, 28 January 2008
Top fighter pilots from the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) will be conducting night-time flying training over the Hawkesbury area on Wednesday, 30 January 2008.
The pilots from No 2. Operational Conversion Unit (2OCU) at RAAF Base Williamtown, near Newcastle, will be flying F/A-18 Hornet fighter jets to RAAF Base Richmond as part of a refresher course.
All flights are scheduled to occur between 8pm and 10pm.
Thursday, 31 January 2008 has been scheduled as a bad weather alternative for the aircraft to come to Richmond.
Being familiar with night-time landings at RAAF Base Richmond is a vital safety requirement for RAAF pilots who regularly fly out of RAAF Base Williamtown.
RAAF Base Richmond is a primary ‘diversion’ runway should Williamtown be unavailable for landing.
The pilots will practice using RAAF Base Richmond’s instrument landing system, which broadcasts a radio signal to landing aircraft and allows pilots to safely land their aircraft during night-time and bad weather conditions.
More Hornet flights are scheduled for RAAF Base Richmond on 11 February 2008.
Hornets from 2OCU, along with Hawk 127 lead-in fighter trainers also from RAAF Base Williamtown, regularly conduct year-round training at RAAF Base Richmond.
