F/A-18E Super Hornet AWACS AWACS stands for Airborne Warning and Command System, and these aircraft are prize targets in a campaign. The US version is built in a Boeing airframe and the Soviet / Russian version on an Ilyushin IL-72 or Il-96 airframe. How do you tell them apart? Well the best visual cue is probably the tail configuration. Notice where the horizontal stabilisers originate... On the Boeing they start at the fuselage and on the Ilyushin half way up the tail fin. Not that it is likely you'll ever get close enough to an enemy AWACS to make a visual ID... they are usually heavily guarded assets |
