Sabre Ace From American Warplanes by Bill Gunston: ""At a time when the average US Navy fighter had 1,000hp and two machine guns, the Bureau of Aeronautics asked Grumman to build a fighter with more than 4,000hp and a weight of fire more than 10 times as great. |
Tigercats arrived at a time when emphasis was rapidly switching to the jet.
Various delays kept them out of action in WW2 but they played an important role post-war with Marine Squadrons in the Pacific Theatre and China. Most of the 250 built were N - night fighter - or P - photographic - variants. |
