Small, light, relatively inexpensive and above all else a masterpiece of simplicity, probably no other airplane embodies recreational and small-plane flight than the Piper Cub. Weighing just over 1,000 pounds fully loaded and fueled, the Cub was so light that pilots flying solo had to sit in the back seat to maintain equal weight distribution.

With a hand-crank engine that required a throw of the prop to ignite, pilots without a "ground crew" had to tie down or chock the plane until they could get the plane ready for takeoff...and then unravel the knot or move the chock before hopping back in. More than one Cub started scuttling forward with a pilot in chase, sometimes bound for nearby collision...or even unmanned flight.
