Air Power - The Cold War

English Electric Canberra B.2

" First flown in 1949, the Canberra was the RAF's first axial-jet aircraft. Its superb low-level agility belied its bomber role.

A large relative wing area also meant it could excel as a high-level photo recon platform, which in its PR.9 form the Canberra still serves today, over 50 years in service. "

MiGMan's Cold War Missions
Gibraltar Recce

Here's a fun mission that takes only 15 minutes to fly using Microsoft Flight Simulator 2002. You can fly the whole mission with one eye on the compass heading and one eye out the cockpit window.

The leg between B and C is through some winding valleys and will test your nerve at 200 feet! Don't forget to turn Terrain Mesh complexity to 100 %.

Mission: Conduct an early photo-recce over the North African airbases of Tunisia and Tangiers.
Takeoff: Gibraltar Airbase - 0730 or 0800 hrs, May 1st 1952.
  • Takeoff from runway 09
  • Execute a hard to right to heading 180 degrees (South)
  • A - After a few minutes you will go feet dry
  • A couple of minutes later you will see Tunisia airport
  • B - Turn right 90 degrees to heading 270 (West)
  • Fly nap-of-the-earth through the valleys
  • C - On reaching the coast turn right 120 degrees to heading 030 (NNE)
  • Follow the coastline at low level
  • You will pass Tangiers aiport
  • D - You will cross the strait of Gibraltar
  • E - When you reach the coast turn right to heading 090 (East)
  • Contact Gibraltar Tower

I actually flew the route at 0800 to get better lighting for the screenshots.
