02 - Derwent Dam Training - Day

Ac : Avro Lancaster

Briefing

" The Derwent Dam was chosen by the newly formed 617 Squadron as an area for practicing the intensive low level flying and mine aiming techniques as it was very similar to the German dams they were going to attack. Although no Upkeep mines were dropped on the Derwent Dam it was invaluable for practicing the precise low level flying critical for the breaching of the Dams on the Ruhr.

These practice raids lasted for a six-week period and were led by Guy Gibson.

At the target area :
  • Maintain altitude of 1,130 feet
  • Speed 195 kts
DO NOT destroy the dam !!!!! "
