The Break Turn

I had great fun exploring the maneuoverability of the Typhoon. At low speeds and high Angle of Attack there is practically nothing that can turn with it.

Of course being at low speed and high AOA is a risky place to be in a dogfight. Your energy is depleted and if a missile comes your way then you wouldn't be able to do much about it. And the missiles in Typhoon demand respect!

Anyway, caveats in mind let's look at the sensational turn.

Let's say you're dogfighting a bogey and are sure that it has no buddies around. You may be approaching head on and want to do a bat-turn to let rip with an ASRAAM. Then try this.

  • Speed about 450 knots
  • Throttle back to 20 %
  • Speed brake extend
  • Bank 90 degrees
  • Haul back on the stick and roll inverted
  • Retract speed brake
  • Throttle to 100 %
  • Level out
You should find yourself on a reciprocal heading (180 degrees) to your original and about 2,000 feet lower. Airspeed will have bled to under 200 knots. But hopefully you're on the bandit's tail! Go do some damage!

Low speed and she turns on a dime!

Low speed and she turns on a dime!
