Buck Danny
No.49 - La Nuit du Serpent (Night of the Snake)

Chino reported:

I picked up the latest Buck Danny comic (#49, September 2000) in France on my last trip there. The book is called "La Nuit du Serpent" (Night of the Snake) and has Buck and his pals flying the just-introduced F-22 Raptor in support of a rescue mission over North Korea.

It's quite a good Buck Danny, perhaps the most "realistic" of the long-running series. No secret para-military organizations run by the Dragon Lady this time -- just some dirty tricks by the North Koreans. They manage to lure a USAF F-16 pilot into DPRK air space where they shoot him down with a SAM, intending to use this "American aggression" for progaganda value. Up until a few months ago, this would have seemed reasonably plausible.

The role of the F-22 is also plausible -- although just barely introduced in this near-future scenario, Buck and his two wingmen fly to Korea where the stealthy F-22 is used to draw off DPRK fighters from rescue helicopters searching for the downed pilot. They show up in unseen in DPRK air space, then open their weapon bays to allow brief radar detection. Of course nothing goes EXACTLY as planned, and Buck has to save the day in a special way (the downed pilot is one of Buck's best friends, oddly enough).
