Sydney Olympics 2000
Australia's Royal family

Several years ago Australia produced a movie which explored (with musical accompaniment) the often troubled relationship with our royal family. It may come as a shock to some that Australia's love of pomp and finery - inherited from the most venerable European traditions - metamorphised down here into the concept of "egalitarian royalty" where we have not one, not two, but as many monarchs as the occasion demands!

On this occasion the ceremony warranted about 60 Queens in full regalia!

" ... and then the drag queens: in a parade around the track where the intense Marion Jones had held forth only 24 hours before, the 60 queens vamped in their size 14 platform patent leather boots. Each wore a costume more flamboyant than the last, and they trailed a replica of the silver bus that journeyed through the Outback, drag queens aboard, in the cult film 'The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.'

Initially, when this inclusion was announced, Sydney bishops sputtered in indignation. As usual, in a town where the police department puts a float in the annual Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, this protest fizzled. "
