Sydney Olympics 2000
Marathon

My closest Olympic encounter came on the last day - at the last event - the Men's Marathon. The event started on the North side of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and went acros the bridge, out through Circular Quay (past the Opera House), east through Sydney's most famous crossroads - Taylor Square in Darlinghurst - out to the Eastern suburbs then back through Taylor Square again - where I took these terrific snaps! - and west to Homebush Bay where a capacity crowd awaited the last runner.

A poignant moment occured as the runner from Burundi pulled out at the 24 kilometre mark. At first we thought he was stopping for a drink but as it dawned on the crowd that this brave runner had reached his limit a huge roar went up from the crowd.

Burundi's runner in the Sydney 2000 Men's Marathon calls it a day.

As soon as the last marathoner finished the closing ceremony began and the party was on!

Gezahgne Abera of Ethiopia won the gold medal with a time of 2 hours, 10.11 minutes.
