Video / DVD / Digital Jet Pilot

Chino reported:

" Jet Fighter is a 1957 Howard Hughes film starring John Wayne and Janet Leigh (the film was shot in 1950 but not released until 1957).

The plot and acting are beyond ridiculous -- Leigh is a Soviet fighter pilot who flies from Siberia to Alaska to defect (the Soviets did have some female combat pilots in WW2, but I don't think they flew jets post-war). She is given the run of the US base and even flies several US fighters, and of course she and the Duke fall in love. And of course, she really turns out to be a spy.

Duh!

Leigh's radio dialog while flying (in her perfect non-Russian accent) is especially lame, though Wayne's isn't really much better!

Good thing the DVD has direct scene-access and fast forward so you can avoid most of this noise and just look at the jets! Air footage is the highlight of this film, and Chuck Yeager himself flew some of the aerial combat and stunt scenes in the F-86F Sabre. You also see T-33's as well as F-94's intercepting a B-36 at night (the black "Yak" fighter Leigh defects in is actually a T-33 -- shades of the The MiG-28 - an aircraft that only existed in Top Gun!.

The F-86 flight scenes are top-notch, especially one scene in which Leigh and Wayne fly side-by-side playfully doing barrel rolls around each other's flight path. The F-86 was certainly one of the prettiest airplanes to ever fly. I would call "Jet Pilot" a pseudo-documentary on early jets, and for this, it's certainly worth $10!"

Jet Pilot featured John Wayne and Chuck Yeager!

Well worth a look

Interesting factoid:
Note: Howard Hughes, the director, was famous for the Spruce Goose - which you can see in Crimson Skies. and for the invention of the cantilever brassiere for Jane Russell, which you can't!
