"October Sky (1999) is the true story of Homer Hickam, a young boy growing up in a West Virginia coal-mining town in the 1950's.

While everyone expects that the boys in the town will become coal miners like their fathers, Homer gets another idea after Sputnik is launched. He decides to build and launch his own rocket. Of course everyone in town thinks they are crazy, and Homer's father is especially hard on him. But with the help of a couple of friends and with the backing of one teacher, he perseveres and manages to win a spot in a national science fair.

Homer eventually became an engineer for NASA, working with the astronauts in the Space Shuttle program. A very inspiring movie! "
