Video / DVD / Digital Magic of Flight

Chino reported:

"The Magic of Flight" was shot as a super-size-screen IMAX feature for the Museum of Naval Aviation in Pensacola, Florida.

I saw it in IMAX two years ago at the USAF Museum in Dayton, Ohio, and was blown away by the film shot from IMAX cameras mounted on F/A-18 Hornets, both in Blue Angels performances, and in aircraft carrier operations. This is the core of the film, but it also has excellent material on the Wright Brothers, modern aerobatics, G-force training, flat spins, Harriers, and more.

The DVD includes a special on the making of the film, which required solving a multitude of technical and other problems. The wide-angle (nearly fisheye) aerial shots show some severely curved horizons, but otherwise the translation to the small screen is amazingly good.

When the Blue Angels fly tight formations, they mean TIGHT. From the slot position, the lead Hornet seems to be glued in position just above the canopy rail. "
