Fantastic Four - the movie - 2005

Having seen the Fantastic Four movie at the cinema seven times now I'm pretty certain it's the best Comic book adaptation ever made!

Or at least one of the best.

Fantastic Four - the movie

I saw the movie once, cold, then went back and prepped myself by reading Fantastic Four issues 21-40 in the Marvel "Essentials" reprint. The movie does a great job of capturing the main points of the story arc up to about year 4 of the Fantastic Four's original storyline. There is very little stilted dialogue in Stan Lee's original work, the FF were probably about the most believable characters presented in superhero comicdom at that time (early 1960's). The dialogue in the movie just zings along!

Sue: "You don't really want to walk around on fire for the rest of your life do you?"

Johnny: "Is that a trick question?"

Reed Richards - aka Mr Fantastic Sue Storm - aka Invisible Girl Johnny Storm - aka The Human Torch Ben Grimm - aka The Thing
LEFT TO RIGHT - Reed Richards - a.k.a. Mr Fantastic - Sue Storm - a.k.a. Invisible Girl
Johnny Storm - a.k.a. The Human Torch - Ben Grimm - a.k.a. The Thing

The movie draws you into the dynamics of the group such as the friction between Torch and Thing and the frustrated love interest between Sue the over-intellectualising Reed Richards.

"Am I the only one who thinks this is cool?"

Classic panels from the comic book are woven into the action, such as Thing's destruction of Johnny's wheels, and I especially like the way iconic dialogue motifs from Torch's "Flame on ! " cry to Thing's "It's clobbering time !" are explained.

The details are all there, and what was probably the first superhero group not to have secret identities is brought convincingly to life.

For aviation fans there is also the helipad on top of the Baxter Building, presumably ready to go with the Fantasti-car in Fantastic Four 2 !

MiG-rating - 5 MiGs out of 5 - Ace !!! I could watch it 5 times.
