Common terms and abbreviationsHere are some common abbreviations you will encounter in pilot checklists, shown in the general order you will see them from takeoff to landing.MiGMan thanks Jeremy King for correcting these definitions. V(1) min single engine speed (lower than rotation, but you can continue takeoff...rudder effective enough to track straight on runway.) V(r) rotate Velocity at which to Rotate the a/c. -- usually defined according to the ordnance loadout. V(2) decision speed. If an engine quits above this speed, you are committed to getting an underpowered beast in the air.. Below this speed you can still get it stop. Dependant on runway length and condition, and atmospheric conditions. V (T-OFF) Velocity at which the a/c takes off. V(so) Stall, Clean V(s1) Stall, Landing configuration V(y) Max Rate of Climb V(x) Max Angle of climb V(a) Manoueuvering Speed V(ne) Velocity never exceed V APPROACH The recommended approach to landing speed. V LANDING The recommended landing speed V LIM FLAPS The max speed for lowering flaps V(le) Max Landing gear extention speed V ECON CRUISE The most economical cruise speed. V CLIMB The Velocity which will gave max sustained rate of climb. |
