The flying boat was extensively used for maritime reconnaissance. A crew of 6 was needed to tend to her needs. The BV 138 had three 20 mm MG 151 cannons, a 13mm MG 131 machine gun and four 331 lb. depth charges or other stores under the inner right wing.
