Modern PC's have enough DOS to run this (Win98 is based on DOS).Dawn Patrol
Dawn Patrol works with a TnT2 (though not in accelerated mode)Dawn Patrol
There is no way we can upgrade these DOS games to work with modern 3D cards - it would require a great lump of effort to get it to fit in the available memory space and DOS does not speak to D3DDawn Patrol

1998 | F-16 Multirole Fighter ran very smoothly on my Pentium 233MMX with 64 meg ram. The terrain graphics were breathtaking and flight felt fluid.F-16 Multirole Fighter
1999 | In February 1999 I acquired a Creative 3D Blaster Banshee. With this device installed the magnificence of the graphic engine was revealed. By even the standards of 1998 current standards this sim had fairly modest hardware requirements. It ran fine with an average Pentium and if you added a 3D accelerator card it was an awesome graphic experience. As is often the case with 3D accelerators, changing the resoution seemed to have no effect on framerate, so I ran it at 800 x 600 and sometimes 1024 x 768 on my 15" monitor.F-16 Multirole Fighter

Installation was a breeze. The full install only took 343 meg of disk space, which was modest by 1999 standards The Patch installation wasn't such a breeze.F-22 Lightning 3
Clicking on the Update Product button opened my internet connection and activated the Novalogic Update wizard. This downloaded a newer version of itself from the Novalogic server, which took a minute, then it checked for the latest patch and downloaded that, which took about 90 minutes at 3.0 k per second... it's a 13 Meg file. (That was with a 38K modem and a pretty good connection.)F-22 Lightning 3
This system makes updating painless and I dare say much less intimidating for the less 'computer literate' users than having to find a website and locate the patch. Of course Murphy's Law applied as usual and the connection dropped out with a "reset by server" message. Ok, try again!F-22 Lightning 3

Notes For Users of Union Reality Gear Hardware. Total Air War supports the Union Reality Gear device. In order to use this device you must first install Total Air War and then run the ‘ureality.exe’ program that is located in the ‘Ureality\english\’ directory on your game CD-ROM. Within the game the Gear is used to ‘look’ around the cockpit of your F-22 aircraft in the virtual cockpit view. This view is accessed by pushing the ‘F1’ key (which also toggles the full HUD view). CPU: 3.2GHz quad core processor or betterF-22A (Top Mach Studios)

A dedicated control input device such as a joystick, yoke, or HOTAS-type control device, ideally with dedicated rudder controls, or alternatively an Xbox-type compatible controller is required for the standard or primary flight model. There is no keyboard-only support for the primary model, however there is a fully functional back-up flight model included, identical in every way, called the No-FBW model, which does support keyboard control, but has somewhat reduced handling capabilities at the limits of the flight envelope compared to the standard model.F-22A (Top Mach Studios)

I had to turn some of the detail and distance sliders down, but put micro-texture on FULL to get the great sensation of speed at low level. The resolution was set to 800 x 600 as 1024 x 768 made the HUD too hard to read on a 15" monitor. Jerkiness was visible, but tolerable while on the carrier deck, but in the air things smoothed out.F/A-18E Super Hornet

You can start your game now with F18.exeF/A-18E Super Hornet
The game fails to run if the videos are enabled in the external CONFIG program. The quirk is that the main executable (F18.exe) needs Windows 98 compatibility mode, but if you disable the movies in CONFIG.EXE the game will still not work.F/A-18E Super Hornet
You need to set Windows 98 compatibility mode on CONFIG.EXE as well. I'm pretty certain that the settings are written under different locations in the registry depending on the compatibility flag for CONFIG.EXE. I've noticed this by running CONFIG.EXE with and without compatibility flag and seeing there are basically two sets of saved settings depending on that comp flag.F/A-18E Super Hornet

My first test rig for Falcon 4.0 was Pentium 233MMX.Falcon 4.0
Using the settings on page 16-10 of the manual gave a very smooth performance. I decreased the Terrain detail a couple of notches to eliminate a very slight stuttering. Most of the screenshots in this article were taken at these settings.Falcon 4.0
From accounts in the Newsgroups a Pentium 200 is probably the minimum spec you will need to enjoy good frame rates and the manual refers to a Pentium 166, but with all the graphics set at minimum.Falcon 4.0
2001Falcon 4.0 | ||
In the 3 years since Falcon 4.0 was released CPU's have sped up about 4 times - nearing the 2 giga-Herz mark now and graphics technology has seen the demise of 3DFX Voodoo, which was the hot gear in 1998. I ran Falcon 4.0on my Celeron-466with a Hercules GeForce 2 MX and was now able to max the graphics almost right out!Falcon 4.0
However the silky smooth ride didn't extend into the campaign where the burden of running the sim obviously shifts onto the CPU as it calculates the progress of the real time campaign while you fly about.Falcon 4.0

I got hold of the sim in Denmark in July 2001. In the 18 months since Flanker 2.0's release machine specs had gone way up. 1.2 MHz CPU's were now common and the price of RAM had plummeted, with 128 MB selling for about AUD $100.00 (USD $50.00). My machine at the time was a Celeron-466 which fell somewhere between the recommended and "smokin'" requirements. I was really pleased to find that the sim ran smooth as silk with most graphics sliders except view distance set at maximum. The only stuttering occured in extremely built up areas like Sevastopol. This could be largely alleviated by zooming the view in - towards the HUD - so that a lesser number of objects were visible. Flanker 2.0

From Mike Eustace and Doug Attrell's notes.Red Star over Korea
Users with low spec computers, should fly as a "beginner", where you will get slightly less scenery at the P'Yonggang MiG base to aid in a better frame rate when landing. If you fly at veteran or ace, more objects appear at the airfield, giving it a busier look. There is no difference in how many enemies you encounter during the missions.Red Star over Korea
Graphics ran very fluidly on my test system - Pentium 233MMXwith no graphics acceleration.Sabre Ace
That was until we approached Seoul on the first campaign mission. The frame rate then slowed to about 2/sec.Sabre Ace
In January 1999 I tested Sabre Ace again with a Pentium 233MMX and a Creative 3D Blaster Banshee. The frame rate again was absolutely smooth until the flak was encountered at Seoul. Apparently the playing of the sampled AAA sounds was causing the hit, and it was severe! I ended up dragging the enemy fighters away from the flak in order to enjoy a smooth dogfight! The next thing to investigate is whether a 32 or 64 bit soundcard will improve performance.Sabre Ace
LATEST INTEL:Sabre Ace
My sources tell me that this performance hit is unavoidable. Even on a Celeron-466 the frame rate staggers when these sounds are playing. You could possibly avoid the problem by playing with the sound off... but who wants to do that?Sabre Ace

2002 | On my Celeron 466 Mk II with a Hercules 3D Prophet III Titanium 500 graphics adaptor the planes flew smoothly and with an acceptable frame rate. This was a pleasant surprise as some of the complex models I've tried in recent products absolutely slay the frame rate! ANyway I don't know how he did it but Roger Dial has given us good looking and detailed planes that actually fly! In the missions the frame rate plummeted as the 466 CPU struggled to digest the objects - flying and otherwise. So I sent the campaign up the road for PC to thrash it out on his new rig.Sabre vs. MiG
I'd say you need a 1 GHz + processor to enjoy smooth frame rates in the campaign missions.Sabre vs. MiG
