Air Power The Cold War

MiG-15 'Fagot'

In fact the MiG-15 out-turned, out-climbed and had a higher service ceiling than the North American F-86K Sabre.
Also - the original NATO reporting name was "Falcon" - it would be interesting to get the story behind changing the name from that of a 'Bird of Prey' to a 'block of wood' !
This is one of my favourite aircraft to fly in Air Power: The Cold War (2000)due to the good virtual cockpit.
Fly it in Warsaw Pact. Mission 3.

First flown in 1947, the prototype was based on the German Ta-183 untested jet fighter design. The engine was a reworked version of the Rolls-Royce Nene which had somewhat rashly been given to the Russians at the end of WW2. 8,000 of these fast and agile fighters were produced in only 5 years and many were exported around the globe. The '15 is best known for its service in Korea where it put up formidable opposition to the American F-86's.
