Description
Evonne Goolagong was a household name to several generations of Australians, being a World No.1 Tennis player, winning the French Open Singles and the women's singles at Wimbledon, 86 titles in all. Evonne was born in Griffith in 1951, third child of eight, and grew up in Barellan. Her father Ken was a sheep shearer. Leeton is a major centre in the Riverina and Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area and home to Yanco Agricultural High School, where generations of Australian schoolchildren have learned the science of the land.
