Jetfighter III

MiGMan’s Combat Diary, 1998

JetFighter III, released in 1997 was probably the last of the great DOS Combat Flight Sims.
It was one of the first to support the 3DFX chipset and portrayed very detailed terrain... but still ran at a playable speed! The Navigation and Weapon systems were simple in operation so you could concentrate on turnin' and burnin'.
I used to really enjoy low level flight....the ground whizzed past. The level of detail in the terrain was awesome, power lines, rivers, sheer cliff faces, everything where it should be in accordance with real navigation charts. The sense of distance and speed was also good in the furballs, with a gun kill being quite a challenge on the harder settings.
The campaigns were atmospheric, reminiscent of the good old days of "Strike Commander". The interactive environment on the aircraft carrier built atmosphere and a sense of continuity throughout the campaigns.
The first time you run Jetfighter III, you will begin a series of training missions. The missions are described on pages 71- 98 of your Jetfigher III R.D.F handbook.
Use these missions in conjunction with my Pilot Checklists to master operation of the aircraft.
Whenever we received a new aircraft type at Zhukovskiy airbase, we would take it up and run through procedures similar to these to check the aircraft's stability and handling characteristics.

One of the fun things about flight sims is getting the chance to fly hot aircraft that haven't yet been built.

And then flying those aircraft at dangerously low altitudes and speeds!

Ground detail was amazing in Jetfighter 3.

Mountains were now textured and awesome in size.

Carrier takeoffs and landings were a blast. The action was hectic and fluid.
