Lock On Modern Air Combat

MiGMan’s MiG-29 Campaign on the Crimean Peninsula

Having graduated Frontal Aviation's Fighter Pilot Academy with honours, you are ready to take control of a MiG in an operational theatre.

The first couple of days have you scheduled for short training hops. Take note of the local landmarks. There are a few lakes and prominent coastal features which will help orient you.

All missions are flown from Bagerovo Airbase, near Kerch.

Stage 1: Orientation

Day 01: 0600: Circuit training
Day 01: 1430: Train - Air to Ground
Day 02: 0700: Train - Air to Air.

Stage 2: Escalation

Day 02: 1700: Intercept Spy Plane
Day 02: 2300: Night CAP
Day 03: 0500: CAP

Stage 3: Limited War

Day 03: 1400: TARCAP. Cover the Su-25's
Day 03: 1630: TARCAP Cover the Su-25's
Day 04: 0630: TARCAP Airbase Strike
Day 04: 1100: Scramble! Defend your base against an incoming strike.

Mission 01

Location: Novorossijsk

Takeoff and visual navigation

Time : 1130

Briefing

Day 1 of your training.

Takeoff from runway 04 and climb to 1000 metres and 500 kph

Turn right about 90 degrees and follow the coast.

You will reach an airbase

Turn left 180 degrees

Fly back up overland until see your base to the left

Turn left again

When you have passed over your base, turn left to land on runway 04

Select "Landing Mode" and fly to the suggested altitude, airspeed and position for landing.

Fun Flying in this mission...

Fly low and "buzz" the ships

Formate on the 2 Su-27 Flankers which will take off from the aircraft carrier and fly the same route as you.

Do a "touch and go" if you like.

Mission 02

Location : Bagerovo AB near Kerch

Training - Air to Ground

Time : 0600

Briefing

Day 1 of your training.

Takeoff from runway 05 and

Fly to the range, attack the trucks with rockets and bombs

With object labels on you can see the targets from miles away, which is a good thing. It's entirely up to you whether you leave labels on or off. I tend to turn them off if things are going well, and flick them on if I've lost track of things... which happens a lot!

As the sim models it, which apparently is close to real world conditions, vehicle size ground targets are incredibly difficult to see from a fast moving jet.

Here's a trick which helps maintain immersion in the sim - tell your wingman to attack the ground targets with "Backslash - F1 - F1 - F5".

Then just fly towards the smoke and flames!
